Professor Emeritus of Medicine and of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, USA.
Professor Francis obtained his MD degree at the University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA and was then an Intern and Resident in Medicine at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, NC, USA). He joined the University of Rochester as a Fellow in Hematology in 1976, and he has remained at this institution where he was Director of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis program from 2001 to 2015.
He served on numerous NIH Review and Advisory Committees and he was the Editor-in-Chief of Thrombosis Research. Professor Francis has both clinical and laboratory research interests. His laboratory research has focused on the structure of fibrinogen and fibrin, and mechanisms of fibrinolysis. He performed clinical research in the areas of venous thrombosis and new anticoagulants.
