Lord Kakkar is Professor of Surgery, University College London, Chairman of University College London Partners Academic Health Science Partnership and Director of the Thrombosis Research Institute, London.
He completed his medical degree at King's College London and received PhD from Imperial College London. His research interests include the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease and cancer-associated thrombosis.
Lord Kakkar was created a life peer in 2010 and sits on the cross benches of the House of Lords. He is Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission and UK Business Ambassador for Healthcare and Life Sciences. Lord Kakkar was appointed a member of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council in December 2014, and is Chairman of the Judicial Appointments Commission.
